This CPE-eligible webinar is a beginner-level course designed to help city and county clerks and local government staff approach their annual audit with confidence. Participants will gain a clear, practical overview of what an audit is, why it matters, and how everyday responsibilities connect directly to government audit readiness. The session will break down the phases of an audit, explain what auditors typically request, and walk through common documents and requirements in plain language. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of their role in the audit process for a successful audit each year- without the last-minute scramble.

This training comes directly from our first-hand experience conducting local government audits, and will include presenter Jenelle Gordon, a former city clerk, offering both the auditor’s perspective and real-world insight from someone who has truly been “on the other side of the table.”

Intended Participants
This session is essential for City and County clerks, administrators, council members, and mayors, especially those new to the position or this process; this course is encouraged to be an introductory training tool.
This course is also useful to seasoned city clerks, accountants, and CPAs who work in the government space and would like a refresher on general best practices. Additionally, accountants not in the government space or those not involved in the annual financial audit process but want to know how they work may also find this course beneficial as a tool to help make their processes more efficient.

- What an audit is and why it matters for local governments
- How staying organized makes audit season easier
- How daily and monthly tasks connect to audit readiness
- What are the phases of an audit, and what is needed at each phase
- What is on an auditor’s PBC list (provided by client)
- Explanation of common PBC items
Outcomes:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of an audit and the consequences of a late audit
- Know best practices to prepare year-round for a smoother, less stressful audit
- Recognize which monthly tasks are related to audit readiness and how
- Understand the overall audit process and name the phases that are part of it.
- Identify the main documents their auditor will request during an audit (i.e. the auditor’s ‘PBC list’)
- Support their annual audit with confidence and fewer last-minute surprises
